The participants had the opportunity to read deeds from Fernando Pessoa, (Portugal), Pavlos Xioutas (Greece), K. P. Cavafy (Greece), Odysseas Elytis (Greece), Pantelis Michanikos (Cyprus), Leopold Staff (Poland), Juhász Gyula (Hungary), Ranko Marinković (Croatia), Kollari Bağli (Turkey) and to discuss how the myth of Ulysses is still inspiring writers all over the world, 3000 years after Homer.
The workshop was designed and presented by Sotiria Papamargariti and Alexandros Bazoukis, teachers of Greek Language and Literature.

Second Day: Friday 26.05.17, 09:30-13:00
Place: Folk Art Museum, Lefkara
Meeting with Greek – Cypriot Writers
The participants visited the Folk Art Museum which is a 19th century mansion house (house of Patsalου) and the most representative sample of popular architecture. In the lecture room our guests had a meeting with two Greek-Cypriot writers, Emilios Solomou (prose/novel) and Vakis Loizides (poetry). The writes talked about their experience in literature and narrated personal stories, the base for their deeds. The attendees discussed about Literature, Language and Cultural Identity, learned about the Art of Writing and how to promote activities of Creative Writing in class.
Hadjiyiorkena
“It seemed to me strange, absurd. They saw her, or so they claimed, one day roaming the village once more. With that black plereza wrapped around her head and the same staff she was holding thirty years ago, since the time that Hadjiorkena had breathed her last breath.
I didn’t pay much to it- moonstruck people had always flourished in my village- until she made an apparition a few days later. And this time she was not seen by just one, but many. And so, our childhood was revived along with a creature that had lived on the boundary between imagination and reality, gruesome, like Medusa. A creature akin to those archetypal figures of the distant past, the umbilical cord that links today to centuries passed.
Hadjiorkena was what we dreaded the most, bogeyman in the flesh. She must have been around a hundred years old: humped, emaciated. The few teeth she had left in her mouth looked rusty, oxidized, of a mixed green and black colour.”
Emilios Solomou, excerpt from the short story “Hadjiyiorkena”, unpublished collection Miniatures, Translated by Despina Pirketti.

Third Day: Saturday 27.05.017, 08:30-13:30
Place: University of Cyprus, Lefkosia
One-day seminar which took place at the University of Cyprus, Lefkosia:
Topic: “The Bildungsroman /roman of adolescence in classroom”
The seminar was attended by our guests from Europe, the staff of our school and about 60 teachers of Greek Language and Literature who are working in public and private schools in Cyprus. Lectures were given by academic professors, specialized teacher trainers and a film maker/director and were focused on the genre of ‘‘Bildungsroman/roman of adolescence’’ in classroom and related topics of understanding and teaching a novel (as the Intertextuality Method, Creative Writing, Literature and Cinema).
Fragiski Ampatzopoulou, Professor of Modern Greek Literature in Aristotle University of Thessaloniki
Dr Fragiski Ampatzopoulou presented the novel of adolescent (Bildungsroman) of the 20th Century on the theory and the practice of teaching and the benefits it has on students. I will focus on related issues such as identity, war, racism, gender.
Fragiski Ampatzopoulou is a Professor of Modern Greek Philology at the Philosophical School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. She studied Greek philology and history in Athens, New York and Paris. She has taught modern Greek literature in various universities of Greece and abroad. From 2010 to 2012 she was a visiting professor at the University of Cyprus. She has done studies on the Greek surrealism and modern poetry, and prose. She has dealt with issues of history and fiction and also with the literary representation of the Other in Greek and international literature. One of her main interests is the translation of literature and she has been honored with the state translation award in 2001 for the translation of the Confessions of St. Augustine.
“Modernity, war and adulthood in modern Greek fiction in 20th century”,
Dr Alexandros Bazoukis, Modern Greek Studies
The announcement summarized and outlined the evolution of the youthful/ adolescent novel (not necessarily related with Bildungsroman) in the Greek prose of the 20th century, focusing more on significant works-stations and writers who have renewed, enriched or even challenged the typical characteristics of the particular type.
Alexandros Bazoukis was born in Veria in 1975. He graduated with honours from the Faculty of Modern Greek Philology at the Philosophical School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He continued at the same faculty his postgraduate studies in Modern Greek Literature and the General and Comparative Literature. He completed his PhD at the Department Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies of the University of Cyprus on the topic: “The activity and work of the diplomat-writer Rodis Roufos”.
“Aggelos: The tragic hero in Astrophegia of Ι. Μ. Panayiotopoulos»,
Sotiria Papamargariti, Teacher of Greek Language and Literature
The announcement focused on the importance of the introduction in Astrofegia of I. M. P. enabling an "objective" reading of the novel. Through the examination of the introduction and some typical texts–extracts from the book, was illustrated that the novel Astrofegia is not merely the "psychography of an epoch", but a novel loaded with multiple ideological and other controversies, which are personified in the choices and conflicts of the tragic hero, Aggelos.
Sotiria Papamargariti was born in Kranea Elasonos in 1975 and completed the secondary education in Katerini. She studied Classical Studies at the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Cyprus and then she completed a Postgraduate degree at the department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies at the same University on the topic: “Modernism in the literature magazine Nea Estia (1927-1940)”.
“The solemn trip of his life”,
movie presentation, directed by Lakis Papastathis (with English subtitles)
“Literature and filmmaking”, Lakis Papastathis, film maker / director / writer
Transferring literature to the cinema we were of the opinion that we needed to safeguard the literature writers, mainly the poets from the professional speakers who usually terrorize them and take them out of their comfort zone. In order to listen to poets, their voice or silence, there is a need for space, effortless communication, the respect and adequacy of the director, the knowledge of their work, the deep personal reading of the scripts, the patience and the unlimited time in preparation and filming.
Lakis Papastathis was born in Volos in 1943. He studied at the Centre of Film Studies (1963). Lakis Papastathis has enriched the market of culture with significant samples of creative production. The work of Lakis Papastathis is dealing with the dimension of documentary expression and documentation represented by his films: At the Time of the Greeks (1981), Theophilos (1987), The solemn journey of his life (based on the life and work of Georgios Viziinos, 2001), Trip to Mytilene (2010) and the short film Letters from America (1972), which was awarded at the Thessaloniki Film Festival.
Organizing Committee: Alexios Ntiskos (Headmaster of Periferiako Gymnasio kai Lykeio Lefkaron), Sotiria Papamargariti, Dr Alexandros Bazoukis, Anna Maria Lingi (Teachers of Greek Language and Literature). Graphics Design: Marina Zervou (Art Teacher).
Perifereiako Gymnasio kai Lykeio Lefkaron is grateful for their support to the Department of Secondary Education - Ministry of Education and Culture: Dr Kyprianos D. Louis (Director of Secondary Education), Dr Leonidas Galazis (Inspector of Greek Language and Literature), Spiros Antonellos (Inspector of Greek Language and Literature), Marilena Porakou (Teachers’ of Greek Language and Literature Counselor).
